The lesson of “tough love”

Sometimes on the road to success we need someone to tell us “how it is”. We don’t necessarily want to hear it but so often we are standing in our own way and can’t see how much we are stopping ourselves from moving forward.
That someone is normally a business mentor… but are YOU ready to receive that dose of tough love?
In our mentoring program yesterday it was “tough love” day. Not that it was pre-meditated as that, the group was obviously just in alignment to hear a bit of tough love to help them move forward.
The definition of “tough love” according to Wikipedia is: “an expression used when someone treats another person harshly or sternly with the intent to help them in the long run.” Not that I treated anyone harshly or sternly but I asked questions like “Is this really what you want to do?”, “why not chuck it all in and get a salaried job?” because questions like this make us think. They make us realise how much we LOVE being in business for ourselves, how much flexibility it gives us and most of all how much ENJOYMENT it provides us.
Yep it’s hard, yep there are days where we want to walk away, or days we just want to hide… if it was easy – everyone would be out there running their own business successfully. But their not. It takes special courage and determination to run your own business. It takes a belief in yourself and a motivation to keep going like no other profession does.
So sometimes if you are standing in your way and someone shows you some tough love… know that they are doing it out of love and respect for both you and your business. That they are doing it because they want you to succeed, because they can see the amazing potential that you have and they just want you to see it as well.
