How your personal life can effect your business

Did you know that having discipline and focus in all aspects of your life is vital to building your business?
That seems like an obvious statement, doesn’t it? But believe it or not I had no idea that my lack of willpower in my personal life would be hindering my professional life.
I’m the kind of girl who bites her nails. I’ll stop for a couple of weeks but then one day I look down and they are gone – all chewed off. “Oh well” I say to myself “I’ll try again another day”.
The same with exercise – I start off really well and go out walking every day but then it rains, or I’m too busy, or I have a meeting scheduled at the time I would normally exercise and the exercise regime falls by the wayside.
In the past I have just accepted my lack of willpower as being part of who I am and it never occurred to me that it was affecting my work. Then I read The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma which made me realise that my lack of willpower in my personal life was having a massive and negative impact on my business!
Two quotes from the book stood out for me and really got me thinking;
“Through the steel of discipline, you will forge a character rich with courage and peace. Through the virtue of will, you are destined to rise to life’s highest ideal and live within a heavenly mansion filled with all that is good, joyful and vital. Without them, you are lost like a mariner without a compass, one who eventually sinks with his ship.”
“When you control your thoughts, you control your mind. When you control your mind, you control your life. And once you reach the stage of being in total control of your life, you become the master of your destiny.”
The question that I found myself asking was “How on earth can I be a successful business person if I can’t even control my mind enough to stop biting my nails or doing a small bit of exercise?” And my answer … I can’t!
In his book Robin advocates the power of getting up early before everyone else (preferably with the sun) when the world is quiet and you can just ‘be’ with yourself and the inner you can receive guidance about life and business.
(If that wasn’t enough of a message, every Angel Card I had been shown lately was about stillness, being quiet and being guided by me.)
So I took the hint and set myself a challenge – to get up a 6:00am each day and meditate.
When I say ‘meditate’ don’t freak out! I have no idea whether I am meditating properly – I just spend some time each morning being silent and still. Taking a few deep breaths and allowing my thoughts to come through.
The results have been amazing.
I’ve been doing this for three weeks now and this is what has happened to me in that time:
- I got a new client
- I had a sale of one of my online products that I thought had gone dormant
- I was interviewed for a business article as the ‘expert’
- I was notified of $400 in affiliate sales that I didn’t know I had earned
- I turned up to a networking function and was asked to talk about my business to the group
- My partner and I resolved a conflict with a retailer that had got incredibly heated prior to this, smoothly and easily.
Now if you are a sceptic (like my partner) you’ll just say it is a coincidence. That’s fine. But if you’re a believer like me then you’ll know that listening to and trusting your inner voice about which are the most important things to do each day can have an incredibly positive effect on your business.
So here I am, growing my nails, walking the dog every day, and getting up early to do my version of meditation. I am in control of my thoughts. I am in control of my mind. I am in control of my life and I am the master of my destiny.
I am definitely NOT sinking with my ship!
