Why your business needs a Big Hairy Audacious Goal

I love the term Big Hairy Audacious Goal! It has been around since the early 1990s and I think it is a fantastic technique to help keep your business moving forward and pushing boundaries.

If you haven’t heard of it before, a BHAG is a goal for your business that is medium to long term but not impossible. It also needs to be something that can be clearly defined so you know when you have reached it.

A notable example is Amazon.com’s BHAG which is “Every book, ever printed, in any language, all available in less than 60 seconds.”

Now that is a massive goal for Amazon to have but, like all BHAGs it is possible and it gives the whole company a focus to work towards together.

For a start-up business your BHAG might be something like “To be acknowledged as the leading acupuncturist in my local area.” It is achievable and gives you something to aim for.

For me, a BHAG is an essential part of any businesses’ vision board, along with detailing your core values and your businesses’ purpose. Together they will help you stay focused on what you want your business to be and where you want it to go.

All businesses need short-term goals as well as a BHAG, perhaps you want to find five new clients, increase your monthly turn over by a month or get your admin under control. But meeting those short-term goals should always be moving you towards your BHAG.

Your BHAG will be the thing that when you have tough days, it will keep you going.

Here’s my BHAG: To lift the professionalism of the wellness industry so that it is on par with the medical industry. So that when someone is ill, it’s just as viable to visit an acupuncturist or an nutritionist as it is to go to the doctor for an antibiotic.
